Plug In Hybrid Cars will reduce Greenhouse Effect

Using plug-in electric hybrid cars will result in a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new report released by the Natural Resources Defense Council and Electric Power Research Institute.

The study, which was funded by FirstEnergy Corp, estimated the effect of the projected use of hybrid cars in the United States from 2010 to 2050. The study said that Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have the ability to reduce air pollution that is plaguing US cities as well.

Additionally the study said that the PHEVs had sturdy electric motors that were far better in comparison to the internal combustion engines contained in most vehicles today. The increasing use of PHEVs will also reduce automotive exhaust, the study added.

“By systemically addressing these issues, this study represents a milestone for demonstrating the viability of electricity-based power as an alternative to our near total dependency on petroleum-based transportation fuels,” Steve Specker, EPRI president and chief executive officer said in a released statement.

Plug-in electric cars are operated on batteries and are able to be recharged. These cars are being touted as the future of the automotive industry. The present report assessed that if 60 percent of the fleet in the US were converted to plug-in then 3 million to 4 million barrels of petrol could be saved per day.

David Hawkins, the director of NRDC’s climate center said plug-ins were a viable alternative. “NRDC believes that a combination of more efficient vehicles, improved battery technology, and a lower emitting electric power plant fleet can produce substantial reduction in global warming from both the electric power and the transportation sectors,” he added in a statement.
